Volunteering with Beacon is relaxed, welcoming and genuinely rewarding.
We’re not a big corporate charity with clipboards and endless rules. We’re a small, community-focused project supporting local young people who just need someone in their corner.
Sessions are:
Friendly and informal
Structured but fun
Focused on building confidence, not perfection
You might be:
Playing games
Supporting a group activity
Helping a young person try something new
Having real conversations that matter
Most importantly - you won’t be on your own! We work as a team and support each other.
You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be consistent, kind and willing to show up.
That depends on you.
Some volunteers support:
Weekly youth group sessions
One-to-one mentoring (usually weekly or fortnightly)
Occasional holiday trips or special events
We’ll always have a conversation about what works for you before you start.
Beacon values reliability more than availability.
It’s better to commit to something small and stick to it than over-promise.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
As a rough guide:
Youth group support
2 hours per week (plus arriving slightly early)
Mentoring
1 hour per session (usually 8–12 sessions per young person)
Flexible support roles
A few hours per month
We understand people have jobs, families and busy lives.
We’ll work with what’s realistic for you.
We keep things straightforward and transparent.
Initial enquiry – You get in touch and we have an informal chat.
Application form – So we understand your background and interests.
Interview / conversation – A relaxed chat about expectations and suitability.
References & DBS check – Because safeguarding is essential.
Induction & training – We’ll walk you through how Beacon works. Ask you to complete some online training and our own in-house training session.
You start! – Supported and part of the team.
We don’t rush the process — but we also don’t drag it out unnecessarily.
Safeguarding and safety matter to us.
So does making sure you feel confident and prepared.
If you’ve read this far, there’s a good chance Beacon might be the right fit for you.
We’re always looking for kind, reliable adults who want to make a genuine difference in the lives of local young people.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
You just need to care.
If you’re interested, complete the application form below and we’ll be in touch to arrange an informal chat.
We’re excited to hear from you.
